Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first female vice-president and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S history. A member of Democratic Party, she has previously served as the attorney general of California from 2011 to 2017, and also as the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California until 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office prior to her move to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. She was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and then elected again in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris beat Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the second African American woman to serve in the Congress, and the first South Asian American American to serve in the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descholaring for cannabis, a pathway for undocumented immigrants to become citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. National attention was gained for her sharp questions of Trump administration officials during Senate sessions. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual misconduct.
